Kristen Medina, English as a Second Language Specialist, with the Lamar School District has graciously offered to host/facilitate English Language Learner support for our area instructors.  These sessions will be held over the distance learning systems within your school district on the second and fourth Monday from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM.  Mrs. Medina will be covering the basics of what ELL is and strategies that can be used to help meet the needs of these students.  Also, she is always open to covering anything ELL related that the teachers fell that they need help with.

The Southeastern BOCES will issue certificates for each session you attend and will designate these as hours for your ESL/ELL requirement for recertification.  Mrs. Medina will be utilizing the book by Larry Ferlazzo: The ELL Teacher’s Toolbox: Hundreds of Practical Ideas to Support Your Students and possibly Unlocking English Learners’ Potential: Making Content Accessible by Diane Staehr Fenner.  The Southeastern BOCES will purchase copies of these books and distribute them to each member district for staff members to share and have available for the work sessions.

First session will start on January 13th at 5:00 PM.

Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19)

The Southeastern BOCES is actively monitoring the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) situation and its impacts both locally and statewide. Please note: We will update information as official decisions are made. Any community information received from other sources should not be considered official Southeastern BOCES information. The situation is rapidly evolving and we continue to receive and monitor information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) as well as information from the Governor’s Office and Department of Education. Our plan is to continue to monitor and follow current and updated orders and to focus on cleaning and disinfecting during our regularly scheduled spring break.

We will re-evaluate these decisions as appropriate. It is important to note that there is potential and probability for area school closures which would impact our decision of closure. As of today, March 14, 2020, area schools are expected to resume Monday March 23, 2020 at the conclusion of their scheduled spring breaks as well as our spring break. We will continue to work diligently behind the scenes to ensure that if closures occur, we have plans in place. We will continue to provide updates when they are available.
